O'Grady has the father of Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as a financial advisor. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton within Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a diploma from the Wheaton North High School. She appeared as a model in commercials for some time before relocating into Los Angeles. O'Grady started her career by modeling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She had her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular character on ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include programs for TV as well as independent films, among numerous other roles. Her debut role on television was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. The role of the tall, blonde team secretary played from 1993-96. For each of those years she won the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Drama Series. In addition to the her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in an Drama Series in 1995.
