O'Neil tried out for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' excitement about the performance. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges, however she experienced significant defeats during the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and bottom two, respectively. The judges were stunned by this and advised the audience to vote for contestants like Melissa, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil has been always delivering top performance since then, never fell below the top three. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced to the top two spots in the contest. Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
